Bolzano (Italy)
Bolzano is a city of 101,000 inhabitants, located in the province of Bolzano-Bozen in South Tyrol, Italy. The city aims to ensure a high level of accessibility throughout the urban area based on the integration of different modes of transport.
The modal split in Bolzano in 2001/2002 was: pedestrians 35 percent, private cars 33 percent, cycling 17.5 percent, public transport (urban rail and bus) 8 percent, motorbike 6 percent and van/truck 0.5 percent.
One of the objectives is to decrease the share of private car use in the city, while increasing the use of public transport.
To this end, the city recently adopted its Urban Mobility Plan 2020, which together with the city’s Master Plan, promises its inhabitants an appropriate response to the needs and expectations of a population in the middle of the Alps. Regarding sustainable mobility, the Master Plan aims to ensure a high level of accessibility throughout the urban area based on the integration and optimization of different modes of transport.
Measures implemented include car-sharing and car-pooling schemes, a cable car service (funivia), a public taxi service, integrated tariff and transport systems and discounted transport passes for elderly people and students. The city also plans to improve existing cycling networks.
